Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) as a bridge between global citizenship and cultural pluralism within the context of Indonesia’s multicultural society. In the face of increasing globalization, IRE is not only a means of transmitting religious teachings but also a vital instrument for shaping moral character and fostering inclusive and tolerant values grounded in universal humanity. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using literature study as the primary method, drawing from various academic sources related to religious education, global citizenship, and cultural pluralism. The findings reveal that IRE has significant potential to cultivate global awareness, strengthen religious moderation, and instill the values of tolerance, justice, and respect for diversity. Integrating Islamic principles with civic and Pancasila education contributes to the development of a religious identity that harmonizes national and humanitarian values. Moreover, the application of neuroscience-based approaches and inclusive learning strategies is identified as an effective means to enhance students’ understanding of social and cultural pluralism. However, the implementation of IRE in promoting global citizenship still faces challenges, particularly resistance to pluralism and the limited inclusivity of existing curricula. Therefore, curriculum reform, multicultural teacher training, and supportive educational policies that encourage interfaith dialogue and cross-cultural collaboration are essential. Overall, this study highlights that Islamic Religious Education can serve as a transformative social agent in building a peaceful, just, and globally civilized society, through the synergy of religious, national, and universal humanitarian values.
