Post-Publication Discussion

Commitment to Scholarly Dialogue

DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement supports constructive post-publication discussion as an essential component of scholarly communication, research transparency, and the continuous development of research and practice in community engagement and community service. The journal recognizes that the publication of an article does not necessarily conclude scholarly evaluation. Further discussion, critical assessment, and the exchange of evidence-based perspectives may clarify findings, identify limitations, and strengthen the reliability and contribution of published research.

Scope of Post-Publication Discussion

Post-publication discussion may address research methodology, community engagement methods, data analysis and interpretation, theoretical or conceptual frameworks, program implementation, community participation, intervention models, empowerment strategies, evaluation approaches, research findings, conclusions, sustainability, or practical implications of articles published in DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement.

Contributions may include scholarly comments, critical observations, methodological clarifications, alternative interpretations, replication-related observations, or other substantive discussions relevant to previously published work in community engagement, community service, community development, and related fields.

All contributions must demonstrate academic relevance, present a clear rationale, and be supported by appropriate evidence, data, or scholarly references where necessary.

Submission and Editorial Assessment

Readers, researchers, practitioners, and other scholars wishing to comment on an article published in DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement may submit their contributions through the journal's designated submission or communication channels.

Submissions should clearly identify the article under discussion and explain the specific issues, arguments, methods, findings, interpretations, or implications being addressed.

The editorial team will assess each submission based on its relevance to the journal's focus and scope, originality, academic quality, factual accuracy, supporting evidence, clarity of argument, and compliance with publication ethics.

Where appropriate, submissions may undergo peer review or independent expert assessment. The journal reserves the right to request revisions or decline submissions that do not meet its scholarly, ethical, or editorial standards.

Right of Response

To promote fairness, transparency, and balanced scholarly discussion, the authors of the original article may be invited to respond to substantive comments, questions, or criticisms concerning their published work.

Responses should address the issues raised directly, provide supporting evidence or clarification where appropriate, and maintain a professional, objective, and respectful tone.

The editorial team will determine the appropriate format and publication process for comments and responses, taking into account their academic merit, relevance, evidentiary basis, and contribution to the scholarly record.

Ethical Standards and Professional Conduct

All post-publication discussions must adhere to the principles of academic integrity, objectivity, respect, transparency, and responsible scholarly communication.

Contributions should focus on the scholarly content, methodology, evidence, implementation, findings, or interpretation of the published work rather than on personal characteristics, institutional prejudice, or unsupported allegations against the authors.

Contributors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of their statements, properly acknowledging relevant sources, presenting evidence responsibly, and disclosing any relevant conflicts of interest.

DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement does not accept defamatory, abusive, discriminatory, threatening, deliberately misleading, or otherwise inappropriate content.

Concerns about possible fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, citation manipulation, ethical violations, or other forms of research misconduct should be reported through the journal's established procedures for handling allegations of research misconduct rather than being presented as unverified accusations in post-publication commentary.

Publication and Editorial Decisions

Accepted post-publication comments and responses may be published in an appropriate format, subject to the journal's editorial policies, publication procedures, and technical capabilities.

Where applicable, published discussions will include clear references or links to the original article to facilitate access, transparency, and contextual understanding.

Editorial decisions will be based on scholarly merit, relevance, quality of evidence, methodological considerations, and compliance with ethical standards rather than on whether a contribution supports, criticizes, or challenges the conclusions of the original publication.

If post-publication discussion identifies a substantive error or raises credible concerns regarding the reliability, validity, ethical compliance, or integrity of a published article, DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement may conduct a further editorial assessment and take appropriate action.

Such action may include:

  • requesting clarification from the authors;
  • requesting supporting data or documentation;
  • publishing a correction or corrigendum;
  • issuing an expression of concern;
  • conducting additional editorial or expert assessment;
  • retracting the article when warranted; or
  • taking other appropriate action consistent with the journal's publication ethics policies.

Transparency and Preservation of the Scholarly Record

DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement is committed to maintaining a transparent, accurate, reliable, and accessible scholarly record.

Post-publication discussions, author responses, corrections, expressions of concern, retractions, and other related editorial notices will be linked to the relevant publication whenever practicable.

Any editorial action affecting the status, interpretation, or reliability of a published article will be communicated clearly and responsibly in accordance with applicable publication ethics principles.

The journal seeks to ensure that readers can identify the current status of published articles and access relevant post-publication information where such information materially affects the scholarly record.

Commitment to Continuous Scholarly Improvement

Through post-publication discussion, DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement seeks to encourage critical thinking, intellectual exchange, methodological rigor, research transparency, and continuous improvement in community engagement and community service scholarship.

The journal welcomes respectful and evidence-based contributions that advance understanding, clarify scholarly claims, improve community-based practices, identify methodological limitations, and strengthen confidence in the published literature.

By facilitating responsible dialogue after publication, DEVELOPMENT: Journal of Community Engagement aims to foster an inclusive and constructive scholarly environment in which research and community engagement practices can be examined, discussed, challenged, clarified, and refined for the benefit of academic communities, practitioners, partner institutions, communities, and society.
