If misconduct is identified in a published article, the journal will issue a retraction notice linked to the original article.
The first step is to verify the allegation and determine whether it falls within the definition of research misconduct. This initial assessment also includes determining whether the complainant has any potential conflicts of interest that could affect the handling of the allegation.
If there is a possibility of scientific misconduct or significant irregularities in the research, the allegations will be communicated to the corresponding author, who will be asked to provide a detailed response on behalf of all co-authors. After evaluating the response, further investigation and consultation with relevant experts, such as statistical reviewers, may be necessary. If the investigation indicates that misconduct is unlikely to have occurred, the issue may be resolved through clarification, additional analyses, or appropriate corrections. Where necessary, the journal may publish a correction notice or a letter to the editor to clarify the scientific record.
Relevant institutions are expected to conduct thorough investigations into allegations of research misconduct. Authors, journals, and institutions share responsibility for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.
