Allegation of Research Misconduct

Research misconduct includes fabrication, falsification, citation manipulation, plagiarism, and other serious violations of research integrity in the conduct, review, reporting, or publication of scholarly research. When authors are suspected of engaging in research misconduct or other significant irregularities in submitted or published manuscripts, the editors of JSE: Jurnal Sharia Economica are responsible for safeguarding the accuracy, reliability, credibility, and integrity of the scholarly record.

As a scholarly journal dedicated to Islamic Economics and its related disciplines, including Islamic Finance, Islamic Management, Islamic Accounting, Islamic Economic Law, and Sharia-based economic governance, JSE: Jurnal Sharia Economica is committed to maintaining high standards of academic honesty, ethical research conduct, transparency, and accountability throughout the publication process.

In cases involving suspected research misconduct, the editors and Editorial Board of JSE: Jurnal Sharia Economica will follow relevant best practices and guidance established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) to address allegations fairly, objectively, confidentially, and appropriately. The process may include an initial assessment, communication with the authors, examination of supporting evidence, consultation with relevant experts, and further investigation when necessary.

Manuscripts found to contain serious research misconduct may be rejected during the editorial or peer-review process. Where misconduct is confirmed in a published article, the journal may issue a correction, expression of concern, retraction, or another appropriate editorial notice, depending on the nature and severity of the case.

1. Initial Assessment of Allegations

The initial stage involves evaluating the allegation to determine whether the reported concern constitutes research misconduct, a breach of publication ethics, or another type of scholarly irregularity. The editors will examine the information and evidence provided by the complainant, assess the seriousness and credibility of the allegation, and identify any potential conflicts of interest that could compromise the fairness and impartiality of the assessment.

Allegations may concern fabricated or falsified research data, plagiarism, inappropriate citation practices, manipulation of research findings, duplicate publication, unethical authorship arrangements, or misrepresentation of research methods and results.

In research related to Islamic Economics, allegations may also involve the manipulation of financial data, inaccurate reporting of institutional performance, misrepresentation of Sharia compliance findings, or unethical use of confidential financial and organizational information.

The editorial team will distinguish between deliberate misconduct, honest errors, methodological disagreements, and differences in scholarly interpretation before determining whether further investigation is warranted.

2. Communication with Authors and Examination of Evidence

If there is a reasonable basis to suspect research misconduct or significant irregularities, the corresponding author will be contacted and provided with an opportunity to submit a detailed explanation on behalf of the co-authors.

The editors may request relevant supporting documentation, including original research data, statistical analyses, methodological records, ethical approval documents, informed consent records, financial datasets, or other materials necessary to clarify the concerns raised.

The editorial team will evaluate the authors' response objectively and may consult independent experts, statistical reviewers, research ethics specialists, or scholars with relevant expertise in Islamic Economics, Islamic Finance, Islamic Accounting, Islamic Management, or Islamic Economic Law.

All parties involved will be given a fair opportunity to clarify the issues and provide relevant information before an editorial decision is made. The journal will avoid making premature conclusions regarding alleged misconduct before sufficient evidence has been considered.

3. Editorial Actions and Resolution of Allegations

If the available evidence does not substantiate the allegation of misconduct, the matter may be resolved through clarification, additional analyses, corrections to the manuscript, or other appropriate editorial measures.

Where errors or deficiencies are identified without evidence of intentional misconduct, the journal may request appropriate revisions or publish a correction notice to ensure that the scholarly record remains accurate and reliable.

If serious concerns arise regarding the accuracy or integrity of a published article and these concerns cannot be resolved immediately, JSE: Jurnal Sharia Economica may issue an expression of concern while further investigation is conducted.

If reliable evidence demonstrates that a published article contains serious research misconduct, substantially unreliable findings, plagiarism, or other violations that invalidate the integrity of the publication, the journal may issue a formal retraction notice in accordance with relevant publication ethics guidance.

In exceptional circumstances, retraction with replacement may be considered when justified by the nature of the problem and consistent with applicable publication ethics standards.

All editorial notices should clearly identify the affected publication, explain the reason for the editorial action, and remain accessible to readers to preserve the transparency and integrity of the scholarly record.

4. Institutional Involvement and Confidentiality

Authors' affiliated institutions, research organizations, or relevant authorities may be contacted when an institutional investigation is necessary, particularly in cases involving serious allegations or matters beyond the journal's authority or ability to investigate independently.

The journal recognizes that research institutions may have primary responsibility for investigating allegations involving researchers under their supervision or employment. Accordingly, editorial investigations may be coordinated with institutional procedures where appropriate.

JSE: Jurnal Sharia Economica will handle allegations confidentially to the extent reasonably possible, while ensuring procedural fairness, appropriate communication, and protection of the integrity of the investigation.

Information concerning allegations, supporting evidence, correspondence, and investigative findings will be shared only with individuals or institutions that have a legitimate role in addressing the matter, subject to applicable legal and ethical requirements.

The journal will also seek to protect individuals who raise concerns in good faith from inappropriate retaliation, while respecting the rights and reputations of authors and other parties involved in the investigation.

5. Responsibilities of Authors, Editors, and Reviewers

Authors, editors, reviewers, and relevant academic institutions share responsibility for maintaining the accuracy, transparency, reliability, and integrity of scholarly research and publication.

Authors are responsible for ensuring the authenticity of research data, the accuracy of reported findings, the originality of manuscripts, the appropriate acknowledgment of sources, and compliance with applicable ethical and legal requirements.

Editors are responsible for addressing allegations impartially, evaluating available evidence carefully, managing potential conflicts of interest, and taking proportionate editorial action when necessary.

Reviewers are expected to report suspected ethical violations, plagiarism, data inconsistencies, or other significant concerns encountered during manuscript evaluation through confidential communication with the editorial team.

All individuals involved in the editorial process must maintain professional conduct and avoid making unsupported accusations, disclosing confidential information, or using allegations of misconduct for personal or institutional advantage.

6. Commitment to Research Integrity

By addressing allegations of research misconduct through fair, transparent, and evidence-based procedures, JSE: Jurnal Sharia Economica is committed to upholding internationally recognized standards of responsible research practices and scholarly publication.

The journal seeks to protect the integrity of the scientific record through appropriate editorial actions, including manuscript rejection, corrections, expressions of concern, retractions, or retractions with replacement where justified.
